Biography of Unconditional Theatre Company

Austen Fisher is a graduate of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie BFA Actor’s Training Program class of 2017. After his time at the University of Minnesota, Austen took “Every Brilliant Thing” by Duncan MacMillan on tour to Nebraska with the Nebraska Suicide Prevention Society. Since doing this tour, Austen has had a passion for working with (and for) people whose lives have been affected by mental illness. Austen has been a working actor, teacher, and music director in the Twin Cities for three years. He has acted with companies such as Children’s Theatre Company, The Guthrie Theater, and Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. He teaches with Brave New Workshop and Lyric Arts in Anoka, and has had many experiences working with both kids and adults that continue to fuel him to make work about mental health awareness. This fall, Austen started Unconditional Theatre Company, a company dedicated to producing art about/for mental health awareness. By creating a dialogue and providing a space without stigma, Unconditional hopes to bring a sense of community to all those affected by mental illness. He developed a play that reflects his own experiences with mental illness, thinking that perhaps if he spoke about his own experiences, it would encourage others to do the same. This piece began it’s development after Austen’s tour with Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, where he worked with many children who showed signs of depression and anxiety at a very young age. Some people never realize that their normal doesn’t have to be hopeless. Austen wants to use his work to give hope and a sense of discovery to those who need it.
